Dr. Varvara Karagkiozaki is a Specialist Cardiologist, the first Nanomedical doctor in Greece, with a BSc in medicine from the Medical School of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTh), an MSc in Nanosciences & Nanotechnologies, and a PhD in Nanomedicine.
She received her BSc in medicine in 1998. She became a Specialist Cardiologist in 2008 after successful completion of the national exams with distinction. She was specialized in Pediatric Cardiology, Cardiology for athletes at the University Hospital of Southampton, UK, and at AHEPA Hospital of AUTh where she was trained in innovative cardiac imaging techniques (Three Dimensional Echocardiography). She received an MSc diploma with distinction (degree: 8.5/10) in March of 2007 after attendance of two years interdisciplinary Master N&N of AUTH. Then, she received her PhD in nanomedicine from the Medical School of AUTH in November of 2009 with distinction; recitation of oath (Valedictorian) in the ceremony of nomination of PhD class in the medical faculty. Her thesis supervisor was Prof. G. Giannoglou, Prof. in Cardiology & Director of “Cardiovascular Engineering & Atherosclerosis” Lab at AHEPA University Hospital, AUTH. The focus of her doctoral thesis was the development of thrombo-protective nanomaterials for cardiovascular stents and the Atomic Force Microscopy studies on platelets behavior. Following her thesis, she has been working from 2010 until now as a Post-doc Researcher and Leader of Nanomedicine Group at LTFN lab of AUTh. The N&N studies open up her horizons in science and as a result, her traditional medical profile has been converted to a multidisciplinary one with skills and knowledge that can be applied to address clinical hurdles. Her main Post doc Research Activities involve: N&N; nanomedicine; drug delivery; nanoparticles for treatment of cancer, arthritis, neurodegenerative diseases, nanomedicines for atherosclerosis and chronic diseases; oxidative stress diagnostic tools and treatment; thin film processes and drug delivery systems fabrication; optimization of drug eluting stents; biofunctionalization of nanomaterials for tissue regeneration; nanoscale techniques for hemocompatibility and toxicity studies on nanomaterials & nanoparticles (NPs), synthesis and characterization of NPs and of scaffolds, conductive scaffolds for regenerative medicine and biosensors. She has more than 190 invited speeches at international and national conferences, and she is editor of the American book ‘Horizon in Clinical Nanomedicine’. She owns one patent and she has been Principal Investigator in many National and European Nanomedicine Projects, and she is Chair of the Organizing Committee for Nanomedicine and Bioelectronics Workshops at International Conference on Nanosciences & Nanotechnologies (Nanotexnology conferences). She is the co-ordinator of the Greek Nanomedicine Platform with 120 members (hospitals, SMEs, Universities).
Finally, with clinical experience acquired in different Hospitals from 1998, she established the Life Style Medicine Clinic-Nanomedicine Center in Thessaloniki, the first one in Greece, that applies nanomedical, lab-on- a chip diagnostic tests, to diagnose at an early stage, to prevent and treat various chronic diseases. A group of experts provide holistic medical care ranging from lifestyle alterations of the patients, diet, exercise and health coaching for Life Rejuvenation and longetivity!!
